What you have is the start of a Model 723 clone. The Colt Canada C8 Carbine is a modified license-produced version of the US Colt Model 723 carbine. Early 723s had M16A1 type upper receivers with 14.5" pencil profile (A1) barrels. Later 723s had the M16A1E1/C7 type upper receivers with 14.5" gov't profile barrels with M203 cuts. Later production C8s were fitted with a Picatinny-type rail on top of the receiver for attachment BUISs or for mounting a detachable carrying handle like the Colt M4s.
