Any thoughts on a good all-around short wave unit that could do double duty as a SHTF receiver?

I have one of these, and really like it.

RatShack DX-380 (aka made by Sangean so it is decent stuff).
Kenwood TS50S xcvr.
The bigger the receiver, generally speaking, the easier to tune it accurately.
Always wanted a Lowe 150....
Make sure what you buy has a BFO (beat freq oscillator) to get the ham freq transmissions.

What about a basic backup? I see a hand-cranked unit from an outfit called Eton at REI. Any ideas about its usefulness?
The concept of a windup is nice...but they typically use a cheap NiCad battery, which after a year usually won't hold a charge much at all. I hate NiCads...
Also the tuner selectivity is important or you won't hear much. I'd recommend looking at the reviews of gear at eham.net.
