Who Really Made Your AR 15?

This is a 14.33 minute video on how to identify forge marks on the upper and lower receiver. Maybe I am just fascinated with the research this guy has done uncovering all this or maybe I am just a geek. Anyway, this video will help you identify exactly who forged and finished your upper and lower and in any combination of companies. Mine is a Cardinal Forge upper and a Cerro Forge lower.

I’m not sure origin of the forging really determines who “made” your AR. It’s much more complicated than forging.

The company the does the raw forging, which the forge mark identifies, is not the company that finish machines the part. So a company, say Cardinal Forge produces 10,000 lower forging's, and they supply 1,000 to a company. That company has a third party CNC machine and roll mark them, then they go to be anodized at another company. Finally it arrives at the parent company for final inspection and assembly or sale. Some companies might do all or some of the above steps in house but most don't.

There used to be a list of mold marks running around here somewhere. It doesn't matter who made what. The same old "just as good as" vs. "Top tier manufacturers are better because they cost 3 kidneys" argument will just get the thread closed.

Who really cares who forges it?

It's possible that some forgers have better quality control than others.

Unless there were voids or the wrong composition, what could really be that wrong? The machining all comes later. I don’t know, I’m no expert but I’ve seen quality guns with a variety of forget marks.

IMHO, Material consistency in terms of composition and proper process adherence is just as important as machining.

And when it comes to forging, what evidence is there that there is a significant difference in that from one forge to the next?
