Are you actually saying SLRs are better than the Swiss 550 series? Because I own a lot of both. SLRs are not as accurate. True SLRs have commonality with other AK pattern rifles but who gives a crap. MP5s aren't great subguns because they have commonality with Uzis, MP40s and MPLs. That's a meaningless consideration.
Also everyone needs to get over the DI thing. If you push the M16/M4 platform past it's limits, it isn't carbon buildup that stops the rifle, the gas tube melts. That is the weak link, but even if you came out with some wonder gas tube that doesn't melt, the rifle would simply eventually catch on fire just like what happens when you push AKs past their limit.
The only time DI is an actual consideration is if you as a user simply don't want to clean the inside of your receiver and then you want a piston gun. But that means you are going to be cleaning gas ports and piston channels instead because that is where those rifles dump all their carbon emissions. And yes, even those rifles can fail due to carbon buildup in those areas which is why FALs have so many gas settings and most have an adverse conditions setting.
No matter what semi auto you are shooting, that stuff is going somewhere.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.
