    I just read that there was something like 3000 tons of ammonium nitrate stored there.

    CNN reported "The director of the general security directorate later said the blast was caused by 'high explosive materials confiscated years ago,' but did not provide further details.

    The red color ought to give some clues.

    Whatever it was that blew up the “burn rate” or rate of explosive reaction was way way way higher than the roughly 5000fps or so of black powder like a firework. Looked more like the 20000fps+ of PETN, C4, RDX, or equivalent high explosives.
