I think people need to take the AK for what it is, it was a rifle that was designed to used by poorly trained conscripts. They are very reliable especially when poorly taken care of and require little maintenance but other than that, the M16/M4 platform are far better rifles. We can observe proof of this worldwide. Obviously excluding the U.S., but the M4 is the weapon of choice of professional end users world wide. Whether it is the British SAS, Australian's/New Zealand, a host of European countries, etc.. the bulk of high quality Special Forces type units worldwide use M4s.
Another example is the Israelis. The Israelis built perhaps the best AK variant of them all, the Galil but once they received M16s in the 1970s (M16, M16A1, and Colt 653s), the Galil got relegated to reserve type units or more rear echelon units. That is not a ringing endorsement of the AK platform vs the AR platform.
Even with the OPs original post about Pakistan, Can we guess what Pakistani elite forces use? The M4. Which also seems to indicate that the M4 is the better of the two rifles because if it wasn't, Why would their best troops be armed with it?

"More recently"?
Georgia has been interested in joining NATO for at least a decade.
And Russia is not a global power and has not been one for nearly three decades. They're Europe's Saudi Arabia: Once their oil dries up, they'll go back to being the same backwater they were over a century ago.
Probably worth remembering that the Israelis are heavily invested in arming conscripts, not an all-volunteer military like the US. And that they need to be ready, willing, and able to arm every Jewish man, woman, and child in and around Israel in a hurry if the entire Arab world suddenly launches a surprise attack that Israel didn't see coming again.

" Nil desperandum - Never Despair. That is a motto for you and me. All are not dead; and where there is a spark of patriotic fire, we will rekindle it. "
- Samuel Adams -
This is what the Russians are looking to adopt now, obviously has some ergonomic upgrades and is suppressor ready.

It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.

Do you mean that the world does not have extreme conditions?
Because that is false. From below zero winters to 120F deserts and everything in between exists; think of Russia, Middle East, anywhere with extreme winters, rainforests, etc. The rifle must be able to function in some way and reliably in a specific level in such conditions.
The rifle drop-test is important; for example if you drop your weapon from a second story rooftop by accident (not you falling down with the rifle), the rifle needs to survive that torture. Same if you fall into a large puddle of mud or a beach/desert, whatever. Or maybe if your rifle falls accidentally while you're on patrol in the mountains of Afghanistan... you get the point. Its not just about civilian situations, because some of us probably baby our rifles or make them safe queens, but in reality many operators/soldiers do put these weapons under tremendous abuse.
Not advocating for the AK platform here, but having owned many types of rifles including AR15 and AK47, it is quite known that both have their merits in different geographical locations and past wars/conflicts. I love both the AR and AK platform. Lets not turn this into an AR vs AK thread I hope.

The real takeaway on this thread is that a SAN Swiss SG55X modernization to fall in line with M4-style ergonomics would be pretty tits.
Why ain't you guys starting a go-fund-me for that? The world (I!) needs it!
The takeaway is that the M4 is suitable for the vast majority of environments where humans are likely to be able to carry a gun. Additionally, in over a decade of carrying the M4 and other weapons for a living, in units that beat the crap out of weapons to include fastroping and parachuting with them, I have only seen a handful of weapons (of any type) deadlined by such extreme incidents.
The incidents that resulted in a deadlined weapon fell into three categories:
a) the user was separated from his weapon for hours (lawn dart).
b) the user was killed or incapacitated.
c) the incident would have most certainly destroyed an AK. Or did destroy an AK.
A Soldier that is useful rarely chucks his rifle of the roof of a 3 story building. Stuff happens, but even if the rifle is still functional, the user is still separated from the weapon, and therefore useless in a fight.
As for falling in a large puddle of mud...its the peak of comedy when your buddy does it under NODs. It does not necessarily disable an M4, though.
Guys, try taking your guns out. They are lonely in the safe. The M4 is less fragile than you are.
