Poor integral magazine design, heavy gritty communist trigger for conscript slaves, stock designed for child size asians. That about sums it up. Might be a good coat with cosmoline and bury in the backyard just in case weapon though.
I've repaired a few Yugoslavian SKS's, mostly Chinese and Russian made. The trigger can be cleaned up, but the trigger travel before the shot breaks is still quite long. Recutting the barrel crown helps a great deal with accuracy. Most SKS's need the stock shimmed to tighten the fit with the receiver.
The best I've seen a SKS shoot at 300 yards is 3 MOA. Most are 5 MOA shooters or worse.
How big is the steel you plan on shooting at 500 yards?
Train 2 Win
F-Types. 26”W x 21”H, I think. I get 4 shots to hit 2 of them at 480-500yds, and there’s usually a couple at 400, also, along with some closer targets.
To be clear, this is a meme-grade idea. I know I’m not beating (well-employed) Garands on this course of fire with any type of commie semi-auto, and there’s no practical use. I’ll get a good laugh if I hit once at 500. But if I buy an SKS, I’d like to know what I’m looking for to get a less-shitty one. Like, to avoid models that are exceptionally bad.
FWIW, I shot an AR SBR one year and got 2nd.
Thanks, everyone, for all the input thus far.

SKS rifles are neat. I had a Yugo in the past and now I have a Russian built one. They are both pretty crude, and 5+ MOA shooters. You might be able to get a hit at 500 if the stars align and the wind is good...
As to what to look for, check the bore and make sure things fit tightly. Mostly, though, they're a crude battle rifle for Asian peasants...It kinda is what it is. They're getting harder to come by and much more expensive these days so you might not get much selection to choose from.
Couple of cautions: The original firing pin design is prone to sticking in the forward position with will result in uncontrolled full-auto slam firing. It's free floating, and the taper at the front can get wedged into the bolt. Anyway, it's not good, so keep an eye on it and keep it really clean.
The other problem is that many, if not most, SKS rifles have negative sear engagement. If you put enough pressure on the trigger that the sear begins to move out of engagement, but release pressure before the sear can actually disengage, it won't reset to full engagement. Subsequent to this, a hard jar can finish the job and cause an ND. It's fixable with some stoning, but there aren't as many spare parts floating around as there used to be...
They're fun little rifles, though.
Having had many, I will opine that the Norinco is the most accurate out of all of them, even better than the Russians from my use and that of others. It is not 1 MOA, but is certainly less than 2 MOA with ammo it likes. I’d hit metal @ 500-yards … if it were big enough, haha.
Don’t listen to SteyrAUG … he admits he never owned one, LOL! Just gotta love people who comment on something that they have no first-hand experience with …
I treat it like a 22LR rifle, meaning I will try 8 to 10 or more brands and see what the SKS is telling me IT likes best. Then I buy that in bulk or I should say, I used to … for when it was available.
Any complaints about the triggers are completely unfounded. They are very simple to do an excellent trigger job on if you know what you were doing with triggers and make sure that it has no negative engagement. One can easily obtain a crisp 3-1/2 pound pull. FYI, all my info about glass-bedding them, performing trigger jobs, reloading, and other accurizing tips ala your basic semi-auto platform (M1A etc.,) were posted on the old Survivors SKS forums.
But what do I know … I’ve only been tuning, reloading and shooting them for 30-years …
Given that 10-shots are a group and 5-shots may be a favorable trend ... know that just one good 3-shot group can make you an instant internet superstar!

I bought this; probably paid triple what one should for a SKS. It is Chinese, allegedly a Viet Nam bringback. SN on bolt matches receiver, moving parts appear to be in good condition, bore is bright and looks good to the naked eye. Firing pin moves freely under gravity alone, and the trigger isn’t bad at all. I actually would describe it as very good for a milsurp, but every few pulls it’ll give a much heavier break for some reason. There is one Cyrillic character on the rear sight. No idea what the story on the sling is.
The wood is kinda beat up, but otherwise everything appears to be in great shape and of good quality for commie trash. I think I’ll clean it up and shoot it this weekend.
