I just prefer the front sight setup. Didn't notice the handguard being any shorter but I believe you. With a VFG it doesn't matter to me. But I've installed ONE free float handguard and while it wasn't horrible, it was a never again moment.
Also 100% Colt pedigree works for me. I know gas port sizes for barrel length (I actually have a 6945) will be correct and all that fun stuff.

Doesn't have to make sense but I've seen it enough times. Soon as the ban sunsetted and 6920s and 6520s hit the gun shows I'd sometimes pop one open to find it full of Model 1 Sales parts. And even if you called the guy on it, it's ALL mil spec so it's the same thing dude.
Same dickheads who used to pull the aluminum stocks off of Colt CAR-15 rifles and replace them with plastic and then tell you how the plastic was more durable if you noticed.

I would tend to think a reputable dealer like PSA would be above such shenanigans. However, I'm not surprised at what you encountered since the level of "Bubba's Live Bait Shop and Basement Gunsmithing" types have always been present at shows, but seems to have exploded in recent years.
Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.
I hope (but will not hold my breath) that seeing Colt 6920s out and about and available will shut the bozos up who were screaming bloody murder about Colt's announcement that they were temporarily ceasing civilian AR production, to focus on contract work for the government, etc.
In my opinion, I still think the Colt 6920 is a great choice for a first AR.
