Never heard of those. I would think they would be very popular with hikers on the AT or PCT.

I am sadly lacking in the Comm department. I do have a short wave radio, and I do have an ICOM handheld Aviation Transceiver, I use as a back up in the plane. It also gets weather. I can transmit, and receive on the aviation VHF, only to someone else with access to these frequencies. Guess I should look for something ground based.

Gonna bump this thread. Looking for suggestions for two-way radios. Use will be skiing, snowboarding, trail riding / off-roading, hiking, camping and boating. Budget is $150 for a twin pack. Is Motorola still holding up in quality? How about Midland?

    Thanks guys.

The only disadvantage is that it costs $15.

That depends on where you are and what you want to accomplish (which is also true of just about any general statement about radios or communications).

I'm looking for a pair of handheld radios that can also listen in to radio and weather information and has basic encryption (128-bit static key, basically WEP) enabled for private conversations.

Any suggestions? Willing to spend up to $200 for each.

Yeah with it being that cheap I'm very interested, I'm already studying to be a network technician and I'd like more info on the old school tech as well.

You can even find full classes for the Technician's license on YouTube.
