150 and lighter from Rem SPS Tactical .308

Got a new rifle and scope combo in a trade. Thought I'd get into long(ish) range shooting.

Years ago, 168 gr. was the standard. Now I see mostly 150 grain. Should I roll with the lighter bullets?

I don't expect to shoot past 600, and I'm not capable of MOA precision at that distance anyway. Thoughts?

The 1:10 barrel isn't exactly ideal for shooting lighter stuff. When I had a .308 I shot mainly Federal 175's and it performed pretty well. Also, check out Prime ammo. I shoot their 6.5 and its pretty awesome.

Yea, the 168, 175 fed gold metal match are the gold standard. Or possible Black hill with some match bullets. 150 and 147 is more of a surplus Ammo , or possible hunting Ammo.

It might shoot well, but if you want to test its potential, get some heavier match bullets.
    Good luck.

Hornady 155g A-Max groups well out to 300 yards when fired through my 1:10 twist barrel.

Thanks for the replies so far. Each gun has its own personality, but I am hoping to find a reasonably economical (price and recoil) cartridge that allows Minute Of Torso out to 600.

155gr Lapua Scenar-L's will supposedly get you to 1k yds without going transonic like 168/175gr will. I have some, but haven't done much load development with them. Though they do cost more than SMK's.

Are you looking to reload or buy off the shelf in quantity? Hard to beat federal or black hills for off the shelf.

If you are only shooting to 600 do your self a favor and get the FGM 168 SMK. They will also get you to 1k on a stretch.

If you handload I can recommend Nosler 125 gr. BTs. For fun I loaded some up and they shot under a half inch @ 100 with my Rem. 700 VSF. It's a long heavy barrel, but it is also has a 1/12" twist. Some say that's not fast enough for the heavier bullets, but that rifle also produced the smallest group I've ever shot, which was less than 1/4" with 175s.

My 700 SPS Tac in .308 is 1:12 twist and shoots 168s very well. Unless the twist rate is marked on the barrel, yours is 1:12 too and should the lighter bullets just fine.
