I was reading yesterday where China was quarantining used money and printing all new bills. The used bills are going into a warehouse until they can be decontaminated and while grabbing a burger I was thinking if you can catch it from money how easy would it be to catch from that ketchup bottle, that mustard bottle, that formica tabletop. I am not sure if it is proven yet but the stories of it living for up to 9 days on smooth surfaces is very troubling.

But hey how about that flu.

Pretty much this, for perspective. The wide-spread panic over COVID-19 comes because of pandemic fears, perceived danger to the rest of the world, but no one should be in the slightest bit surprised at the way that the epidemic in China has evolved, nor the way it's been managed. Data regarding the overall effects of China's public health policies and their lack of concern for the well-being of their citizens has been known for decades. Is anybody surprised?

The party is generally insensitive to public health. Air pollution contributes to roughly 1.6 million deaths per year. About half the country’s water is too polluted to touch. Food poisoning is routine; infants have starved to death when their parents relied on counterfeit baby formula. Approximately a quarter-million people per year die in traffic accidents, partly because perverse incentives in tort law make it cheaper for a negligent driver to kill a pedestrian than to cripple one.

In order for the party to have responded to COVID-19 this drastically, the death toll would first have had to exceed local officials’ capacity to cover it up, and then also convinced the nation’s top officials that it represents an existential threat.

I’m being a complete and utter ass. You don’t quarantine 1/10th of planet’s population over the goddamned flu.

So I'm unexpectedly sitting in the iso wing of the local hospital taking intense antivirals to deal with a bad case of a routine disease that did not respond and turns out to be way more involved than anyone thought.

    Extremely high temperatures, etc.

Turns out not to be chest, flu, pneumonia, Corona related.

Biggest risk is to my eye and vision.

But don't think I wasn't thinking about the fact that four cases of corona virus have surfaced in Atlanta, a bunch of quarenteened Corona patients were accidentally released in California. (Luckily they called them back before too much exposure took place). But people who should know better made a serious mistake.

And now a confirmed death in Europe.

Thanks much, today I turned the corner and am feeling a hundred times better!

So hopefully get out of this without any permanent damage, just some ongoing discomfort.

Tomorrow they're going to cut me over to oral antivirals and as long as the pain continues the trend down they might let me out.

A well-intentioned doctor in the group I saw 4 days ago completely misdiagnosed my two external symptoms and put me on antibiotics.

When super high fevers and intense pain hit I went to a specialist who immediately diagnosed one of the issues and got me at least on antivirals and made me immediately drive to a specialist ophthalmologist which confirmed his diagnosis with even more information.

But they also missed a key symptom which is what was causing the fevers to go so high was the virus had spread to another very critical part of my body. It took the ER doctor trying for hours to get the fever to go down to realize something else was going on, did an invasive test and found that problem.

And here I sit. Getting better, thankfully.

My point in all this is that even with very good doctors and excellent care facilities stuff happens. What I had/have is a pretty rare form of one disease in a very rare complication that most doctors probably would not have picked up on.

Rare enough that I've agreed to a parade of intern residents tomorrow to see the condition so that maybe they'll recognize it the next time around, at the request of some of the hospital.

20/20 hindsight when you read the case history it makes sense. But some pretty smart people had to home in on it over 2.5 days. Meanwhile I was a pretty sick puppy.
