    Title I violations do not include "or other identification of a firearm required by this chapter", only the SN cannot be removed.

    USC922

    (k) It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to transport, ship, or receive, in interstate or foreign commerce, any firearm which has had the importer’s or manufacturer’s serial number removed, obliterated, or altered or to possess or receive any firearm which has had the importer’s or manufacturer’s serial number removed, obliterated, or altered and has, at any time, been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce

    Correct, that’s what we’ve been saying.

    Any NFA length barrel you place on a registered lower would need to be engraved, UNLESS, the barrel is 16” or longer. If it’s 16” or longer, the rifle no longer meets the requirements of NFA and therefore doesn’t need to be engraved.

    It’s important to remember that these regs have evolved over time. The section you quote was what existed before the .003” depth requirement was added. The “manner” of marking referred to the actual way the marks were made, not where they were placed, and meant you couldn’t use pencil or crayon.

    Or engrave directly on a polymer receiver
