I think that this guy is spot on. A piece of what he says....

The sad truth is that many young women nowadays don’t know how to be in a marriage. As I said above, they’re not taught how to treat a man, but what to expect from him. Meanwhile, they’re flat-out dissuaded from providing anything but their presence to the partnership. They believe that offering their love to the man is sufficient and that men should just be grateful to have them. The idea that women suddenly make a man happier by their presence is a storybook sentiment.

Still, more emphasis is put on being fierce in a “yas, slay queen! You’re a goddess and you deserve to be treated like one!” kind of world.

So they offer nothing and expect everything. They’re useless within the bounds of their own relationships with the only thing they bring to the table is what’s in between their legs, and even that’s something that can’t be taken on a whim, and even then, the value of that fades over time.

Given the culture of promiscuity, I'd venture both sides of the coin have adopted an attitude of "why buy the cow if you can get the milk free?" Combine that with Hallmark Channel Fantasyland....

It reminds me of an old joke a friend told me many years ago about a guy we'll call Tom. Tom had a broad range of hobbies, both craftsman and outdoors. Anyway, his new bride comes home and she starts in telling him "now that I'm here, you don't need all that junk in the shop--you should sell off all that silly fishing gear and machine tools and get rid of all those useless silly model airplanes and guns."

Tom gets a concerned look, and tells her "you're starting to sound like my EX-wife!" Which causes her to absolutely flip out: "WHAT?! YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!"

Tom: "I wasn't..."

I've also heard it expressed as "Men are simple creatures with only four real needs: the need for sex, the need for food, the need for toys and the need to be left alone."

The concept of a family consisting of a man and woman bonded for life raising children has been under attack far longer than I have been on the planet and I am no spring chicken.

I'd say that's more universal than gender specific. I've seen some young "men" who assume they should be able to play video games all day while their "wife" brings them meals and washes their clothes. A marriage is a partnership with goals. If you want kids, make sure the person you're legally contracting with wants them too, and at least close to the same amount. If you want financial stability, make sure they have a record of earning and saving.

If you want a trophy, play a sport. If you just want pleasure in the now, find a FWB or consider short term rentals. Everyone will be happier in the long run.

Reminds me of an old witticism... "If it flies, floats or f***s, it's probably cheaper to rent than own." Richard Marcinko had some colorful commentary about the rise of "Dependency Culture" and a society of "whiny, grievance-laden children who want to be dependents" in one of his business books back in the '90s, IIRC--you could call it a cultural Peter Pan Syndrome, nobody wants to grow up, shoulder the responsibility and get to work "adulting."

As an aside on this, a young lady--and a refreshing rarity, she actually ACTS thus rather than just "being female"--who frequently assists me at a local store and I were discussing that, and I pointed out that "when you think about what our ancestors endured by the time they hit your age, not just the WWII generation but many others before them, and you consider that there have been points in history where *I* would be considered a senior citizen... the adversities we face seem trivial by comparison to having Nazi MG42's opening up on you before you're old enough to drink or the hazards of venturing out to see with only two-foot oaken walls between you and Davy Jones's Locker." From what she mentioned, her dad is retired lifer Army, and it sounds like he raised her right.

A couple thoughts:

Marriage AND divorce are just too easy to get.

Marriages need work, constant preventive maintenance.

You have to WORK on marriages.

Learn your wife's 'love language.'

Thanks to romcoms, Hallmark Channel, and Disney, women expect a story-book wedding and life. Get that fantastical shit out of here.

There are issues on both sides of the fence, but women have been offering "it" up for free for a long time, so why make the commitment? (Not speaking personally, but generally). Men have learned they don't need to make commitments and sacrifices to get "it." Men have learned enough "swipe rights" leads to what they want without all the associated baggage and cost.

Not that any of the above is right, from a long term societal standpoint or a moral standpoint or anything, but that is what has happened. Each individual circumstance of this phenomenon probably has a lot more going on to explain it, but in general it all goes back to the above, and women wanting to prove they are independent and can make all the decisions themselves. (That was not meant in a chauvinistic way, but a description of the feminist viewpoint that men are not needed).

That and, why marry or even just long-term relationship if she's going to get a free pass for as much adultery and irresponsible spending as she likes and have you on the hook for half your income handed over to her every paycheck until one of you dies?

WIth the deck stacked against you like that, and I'm not saying this is necessarily moral, but just on a logical analysis why WOULD anybody pick up the dice and roll that crapshoot?
