Hell I'm thinking even 14.5 pin and welded isn't a great idea.

Not unless it's one of many non-permed guns.

Having never shot a 14.5 is there really much difference between it and a 16" barrel?

It is a little more compact. That is about it. There is a very slight difference in velocity, but not much. I like the 14.5 because every little bit helps when you put a Can on the end.
In no way do I make any money from anyone related to the firearms industry.

I was wondering if it shot that much smoother to make a difference.

Buy a 6920, Aimpoint PRO, 5 PMAGS and a case of ammo. Then go take a professional shooting course. You'll be better off than building an AR pistol & sitting around waiting for the apocalypse.

I have "heard" that a 14.5" pinned with a 1.5 comp running on a mid-length gas system is the cat's meow. Probably going to go this route when BCM offers a CHF ELW barrel.

I have heard this too but always wondered how much difference it could really make.

14.5 is the shortest you can go and use a Mid gas system (Noveske Infidel has to have the KX3 to work right). A 14.5 middy is smother than a 16" carbine. My wife sold her Colt 6920 after shooting my 14.5 middy.
