    He's dead Jim. Barrel KIA

Took the 5.45 training upper to the range for some drills. About 2 mags in I noticed some shots going into the white even thought I was calling the shot into center with my red dot. Upon closer inspection I noticed a few oblong holes. Put another mag through to confirm and thats when I was really started getting keyholes. Aprox. 150 rounds before this session I was putting all my shots into the black 6" circle at 100 yards from prone. Ive never had a barrel go so suddenly from shooing just fine to keyholing in under 1 mag, usually I would see significant accuracy loss. The round count is ~10 1080 round spam cans of 7n6 and ~1k rounds of commercial Wolf 60gr with a moderate firing schedule of various drills and some mid range stuff to 300 yards. Barrel was cleaned between every 1-2k rounds.

In both pics you can see where it was shooting normally circular holes to oblong to keyholes. All within a mag or 2.

    So 11,800 total rounds?
    What manufacture was the barrel?

The upper was a complete Smith and Wesson 5.45 with a chrome lined barrel. Not sure what steel probably 4140 CMV like their other commercial barrels.

Good lord. Aren't most chrome lined barrels good for 20,000 rounds or so? Or is that just KAC.

11K round life for shooting bi-metal jacketed rifle ammo is pretty good IMO.

Yeah, who did the .223 torture test with the steel cased ammo? The steel cases didn't cause any problems but the bullets were ruining barrels at IIRC around 6,000 rounds.

And if you saved a minimum of fifty bucks a case on ammo, you have plenty of money to buy a new barrel and bolt now.
