    Colt 6720 - 6920 quality

Morning - I know the recommended rifle around here is the 6920, and many prefer the 6720 due to its LW bbl. I've owned several 6920's in the past and have never been disappointed. I'm leaning toward the 6720 for just a basic, no frills, HD/patrol rifle. Light, sling, red dot, that's it.

I've seen a ton of threads over the past 6+ months where people have mentioned their quality control is slipping, using parts they've sourced out, and that the quality isn't what it used to be. Is there any reason to suspect that a Colt factory built 6720 or 6920 won't be reliable? Thanks.

I snagged a new 6920 earlier this year and it has been rock solid, no issues. Great all around rifle.

Not in my opinion. The 6720 is a great rifle FWIW; I prefer it to the 6920 for sure.

I'm not one to harp on a member not having searched older threads, but this will help a bit.

Most of the things I've heard people say about QC are related to scuffs in the finish, light/incomplete roll marks, etc. I would counter by saying things like this seem to be consistent with Colt over the years, and not necessarily a new thing. Finish isn't something I get too hung up on anyway.

Assuming new 6920, 6720, Troopers, etc. are built using the same parts as they used to be, and I have no reason to believe they aren't, I'd say the ones made today are probably at least as good as they used to be.

I think when people talk about Colts quality slipping, or parts being sourced out, they are most likely referring to their Competition series made by Bold Ideas in Texas(whom I believe are out of business) or perhaps the Expanse. The 6920 and 6720 are both still rock solid.

I bought a brand new 6720 and a brand new 6920 Trooper back in October or so.

I can tell you that the 6720 looks better and is not beat up like the 6920 is. The 6920 showed up with one of the bolts in the Centurion rail snapped off so I had to send it back to Colt for repair.

Also, the 6720 will not let a 30rd Gen M2 Pmag drop free (I've tried 6 different brand new ones), but it will drop the included 20rd Gen M3 Pmag free.

The quality and consistency is definitely not what would be accepted by the customer base if they weren't Colts. I am still not sure that I am going to keep them, and if I hadn't gotten each of them for less than $700 I would be more irritated.

Recently purchased a Trooper and have fired a few magazines through it.

    1. Not yet impressed with the trigger (dry fired about 500 times or so w/ hammer block). Too much pre-travel and reset for my personal preference. Pull averages 6lbs 10ozs. Not a show stopper but will likely replace as I have all other ARs.

    2. Roll marks aren't perfect (believe it's the Colt "L" but could care less.

    3. Very minor scuff or 2 (I'm fairly ocd) but once again a non-issue.

    4. Upper/lower fitment not perfect but I accept it (getting soft perhaps / lol).

    5. Overall quality is very acceptable to me. It fires well, is consistent, "feels" right in my hands. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. Very good deal imo for 740.00 shipped.

The AR6720 has always been a very underrated model (IMHO). A Hell of a lot of rifle for the money, plus light weight to boot.

Does anyone else besides me have the issue with the mag well in the 6720 being tighter than the 6920?
