Its entirely possible. After a few beers and getting the good idea to remove a muzzle device I had the same thing happen.

The barrel unscrewed from the extension. Everything was replaced by the barrel manufacture after one email. But my gas tube looked exactly like the one in the photo.

No doubt it's possible however, the tube appears to be fully engaged at the barrel nut and gas block while being wrapped around the barrel 1.5 times. It looks funny to me but without looking at the rifle in person we will never know.

I looked at mine in person. It happened exactly the same way.

I wish I would have kept pictures of the Colt Match HBAR I bought on Gunsamerica. It was advertised as having a rifle length KAC RAS. I had never owned a RIS or RAS so I didn't know they wouldn't fit over a heavy barrel. The guy's solution was to dremel out all of the RAS's material. He even removed the rear tension clip and front spring clip. They where held on the rifle by the delta ring and front handguard ring.

Lesson learned.

ETA: I sold the rail at a local gunshow. The buyer's comment was something to the effect: "I don't care, because I don't shoot my guns. I just like to show my friends my bad ass collection, and this looks bad ass". He deserved what he bought.

There is still room for an offset laser or red dot sight. Someone should find the author and let him know ncstar on amazon has great lasers for cheap.
